Skype Therapy

Therapy sessions by Skype can provide a useful alternative to office-based work. Skype therapy is especially useful for people who are restricted by time, location, or family commitments, or who have symptoms or medical conditions that restrict their movements.

Skype therapy is also a convenient way of working if you have a particularly busy schedule. If you haven't experienced online therapy sessions you may be unsure if it's the right way to go. To help, I offer a free initial consultation so that you can 'test the waters'. Every client I've worked with so far over Skype has found it a convenient, comfortable, and effective way of working. The bonus of not having added travel expenses, time, and parking fees - not to mention finding parking! - can make Skype an appealing way of working for many people.

Understandably it's not to everyone's taste, and occasionally people need the security and reassurance of a physical presence. However if you're unsure and would like to give it a go please don't hesitate to get in touch and I'll talk you through it. If you have any previous experience of using Skype you know that once the conversation starts flowing it's easy to forget that you're not in the same room as each other!

When Is Skype Therapy Useful?

Online therapy can be an absolute blessing for people with crippling social anxiety, or who feel highly vulnerable or have significant trust issues. It's also especially useful for people with agoraphobia, or those who work long hours. Whether you are a busy Bristolian or you live further afield than my clinic in Bristol, you are more than welcome to get in touch to arrange a Skype session so that we can discuss your case. I've had the pleasure of working with clients from around the country and around the world - from Chicago to Sao Paulo! So let me know how I can help and I'll be honoured to work with you too.

Is Skype-Based Therapy Effective?

Occasionally people worry that Skype-based therapies won't be as effective as in-person treatment. However a 2010 study in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry (Vol. 71, No. 7) concluded that anger management therapy, conducted over video-conferencing software, was just as effective as the face-to-face treatment. A 2008 meta-analysis in the Journal of Technology in Human Services (Vol. 26, No. 2) stated that "The findings of this meta-analysis...provide strong support for the adoption of online psychological interventions as a legitimate therapeutic activity". Similarly, a systematic review in the Journal of Medical Internet Research (Vol. 14, No. 4) stated that results "indicate that e-therapy seems to be at least equivalent to face-to-face therapy".

"While "e-therapy" is in its infancy and more research is yet to be done, results indicate it is just as effective as in-person treatment."

While "e-therapy" is in its infancy and more research is yet to be done, results indicate it is just as effective as in-person treatment. This has certainly been my experience. Certain types of therapy or counselling such as Analytical Hypnotherapy aren't suited to Skype-based work, whereas Cognitive Therapy, Coherence Therapy, and my own Sequential Psychotherapy are highly practicable. Again, please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. Use the links below to read up about your symptoms.

I'd heard about Seb from a couple of people at work who had been to see him and made massive changes so I was upset when I found out he was no longer based in Edinburgh. On the off chance I thought I'd email him anyway to see if he could recommend anyone else locally. He kindly gave me some details but also suggested we could work over Skype if I wanted to.

I was unsure at first as I thought I'd prefer face-to-face contact, but after getting to work I found it a convenient way of doing the therapy. It was nice not having to travel about to get to the sessions as it's always raining in Scotland! If you're not sure about doing the Skype sessions I recommend giving it a go as you might find you change your mind like I did. Well worth it, thanks Seb!
