More Information About Body Image Issues

Like many symptoms and problems, body-image issues range in severity from a moderate dislike of a certain specific part of ones body, to a significant even intense negative relationship with ones body or self. At the more severe end of the spectrum body-image issues are referred to as Body Dysmorphic Disorder or BDD for short.

According to NHS Choices it's estimated that in the UK one in every 100 people may have some form of Body Dysmophic Disorder. Various cultural factors may be responsible for this number and may cause it to rise over coming decades. It's not uncommon for people to have a mild dislike of certain aspects of their facial features or body-shape for example, however body-image issues become a problem when they take up a large amount of your time or thoughts and have a significant impact on your self-esteem.

"Often sufferers of body-image issues will identify with other symptoms and problems such as depression, social anxiety, low self-esteem, OCD, or an eating disorder. One of the major symptoms driving body dissatisfaction is anxiety."

Body-image issues can significantly impair your life and even prevent you from taking part in certain activities due to a fear of being judged. Often sufferers of body-image issues will identify with other symptoms and problems such as depression, social anxiety, OCD, or an eating disorder. Two of the major symptoms driving body dissatisfaction are anxiety and low self-esteem.

When you strongly dislike a certain aspect of your body you may spend a great deal of time trying to conceal it from others, perhaps even hiding yourself away as much as possible. You may worry about social events or work activities that require meeting new people. A lovely chap I worked with recently told me how he spent most of his time pre-emptively worrying about where he was going and who he was going to meet. He also felt compelled to regularly check himself in the mirror, and said how exhausting it is to be so self-conscious all the time.

One of the interesting things with BDD is that more often than not other people cannot see the supposed flaw or defect that seems so apparent to you. The reason for this is partly due to a natural psychological phenomenon known as 'fixation' or 'tunnel vision'. The more intently you focus on a problem, the great that problem becomes in your mind and the more likely you are to experience a distortion in your perspective.

It's important to realise that body-mage issues are more often than not driven by emotional factors. Many individuals with BDD consider cosmetic surgery as the surest answer to the problem. However because plastic surgery doesn't address the underlying emotional factors your sense of distress or anxiety is only temporarily alleviated. Eventually you start to feel anxious about other parts of your body that seem 'flawed' or 'wrong'. Many sufferers find themselves caught in a very expensive cycle that never ultimately addresses their concerns.

Psychotherapy & Hypnotherapy for Body Image Issues in Bristol and on Skype

Please allow me to reassure you that both psychotherapy and hypnotherapy can be useful in treating body-image issues and body dysmorphic disorder. Often individuals experiencing body image issues don't seek psychological help because, understandably, they feel that the problem is physical. Naturally, people don't like to think of their problems as having a psychological or emotional basis as not only might that give their self-esteem another knock, but also we spend most our lives trying to avoid having to deal with our psychological and emotional issues!

Fortunately however therapy provides a powerful yet gentle way of getting to the root of the anxiety that drives your symptoms, and can often completely resolve your experience of body-image issues. Many of my clients who dislike certain things about themselves have experienced upsetting events in the past, such as bullying, abuse, or a highly critical or unaffectionate parent, and haven't fully bounced back from this negative or distressing experience. Fortunately psychotherapy can help you do just that. In just a few sessions you can start to feel more powerful, in control, and proud of yourself.

Here at The Bristol Psychotherapy & Hypnotherapy Clinic I don't like to use words like 'disorder' for the simple reason that, as I've just stated above, there's often a perfectly understandable reason from your past as to why you feel anxious, self-conscious, or worried about how you are perceived. We can all get knocked down from time to time; therapy simply helps you get back up and to feel good about yourself again. If you'd like me to guide you through the process why not get in touch to book your FREE initial consultation and you can join me either at The Bristol Psychotherapy & Hypnotherapy Clinic or online via Skype for a friendly chat about what's been happening.
