BASIC FACTS ABOUT SLEEP PROBLEMS

Sleep problems and sleep disorders come in all shapes and sizes. Let's face facts. No one likes a bad night's sleep! Having difficulty sleeping can really throw you out of whack! Not only do we need sleep as a way of recharging our batteries, but sleep is one of our body's ways of regulating our hormones, particularly ones relating to stress. This is unfortunate because stress is often the biggest culprit in creating sleepless nights! It's easy to see how you can get into a negative sleep-cycle. According to The Great British Sleep Survey women tend to suffer more sleep problems than men, sleep quality tends to  worsen as we age, and "worrying about tomorrow" and the events of the day before is the most common cause of sleeplessness.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF SLEEP PROBLEMS

There are a number of different types of sleep disturbance that we can experience. Some of which are described below. It is important to note that some sleep issues can be helped with therapy or counselling, while others can be resistant to therapy treatment. In some cases sleep problems can be completely cured through therapy, in other cases significant improvements can be made, and in other cases therapy ultimately proves to be ineffective as the issue has a biological or genetic basis. In this latter case it is sometimes necessary to attempt therapy in order to rule out psychological or emotional factors and thereby enable you to get a better formal diagnosis. If you have any questions you are always welcome to join me for a FREE initial consultation and assessment, after which I will be able to discuss with you the likelihood of a successful outcome through therapy.

THERAPY FOR INSOMNIA

The term insomnia refers to a pronounced difficulty going to sleep. According to The American Academy of Sleep Medicine there are actually 11 different types of insomnia! Ranging from Adjustment Insomnia, which involves difficulty sleeping during times of disturbance, through to Paradoxical Insomnia, in which a person believes they sleep less than they actually do, and Psychological Insomnia, in which excessive worries prevent sleep. Common causes of insomnia include anxiety, stress, depression, worries and obsessions, and compulsive behaviour, such as drinking, smoking, and drug taking. Therapy can help you quickly work through any issues that are preventing you from sleeping and help you sleep soundly once more.

THERAPY FOR NIGHTMARES

Nightmares can be incredibly distressing. We can all have the occasional nightmare without it causing much concern. Sometimes however people can experience fairly persistent or recurrent nightmares. Often these occur during times of intense stress and upheaval, for example during relationship problems or work stress. In such situations some sort of therapy or counselling for bad dreams is advised as it can help you quickly and effectively resolve your life-troubles or interpersonal conflicts and get you back in control of your life again, which, in turn will lead to a cessation of your nightmares and distressing dreams.

THERAPY FOR NIGHT TERRORS

Night terrors, or sleep terrors as they are sometimes called, are sleep disturbances characterised by such things as screaming, shouting, kicking and thrashing, aggressive displays, and numerous other bodily and emotional phenomenon. The name comes from the fact that the individual experiencing a night terror appears to be in a state of abject terror and severe distress. It is often reported in the media that night terrors are incurable, however in some cases this simply not true. Night terrors can in fact be the result of unconscious anxieties. When those anxieties are identified and resolved in therapy the night terrors naturally cease.

THERAPY FOR SLEEP APNEA / SNORING

Sleep apnea and snoring can be caused by things like smoking, alcohol and drug use, as well as weight gain and lack of exercise. In many cases sleep apnea and snoring are an indication of unhealthy life-style choices. Don't worry, I know that no one likes to be preached to about their life style choices! As human beings we can all be a bit compulsive when it comes to things like food and drink, and some other behaviours. It's fair to say however that regular unhealthy life-style choices may be an indication of unresolved feelings or underlying emotional issues such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, stress, relationship problems and so on. The reason for this is that unhealthy life-style choices tend to be those that provide you with a sense of comfort, and to ease, block out, or help you manage bad feelings. In this case therapy for sleep apnea and snoring can be effective in helping you not only sleep better, but feel better about yourself and your life in general. Many people reading this will be thinking, "Yes, but I've tried drinking less, I've tried exercising more. It's just an uphill battle". The truth is that when we try to change a behaviour without addressing the underlying cause or need for that behaviour, change is hard and unwelcome. When we address the underlying issues however, change tends to feel natural and automatic.

THERAPY FOR OTHER SLEEP-RELATED ISSUES

Over the years I've been consulted for help with all sorts of different sleep-related problems. The ones I've written about above are the most common. However you are welcome to get in touch to ask a question about a sleep problem you are having and I'll let you know if I think I can help.

THE BENEFITS OF GETTING HELP FOR YOUR SLEEP DIFFICULTIES

One of the less talked about benefits of therapy, beyond making improvements to your sleep patterns, is that you walk away with a deeper level of self-insight, which enables you to feel more at peace with yourself and have better relationships with other people and the world around you. You feel like a better, stronger version of yourself, and you’re able to create a better life for yourself and the people around you. I’m sure you’ll see from the numerous verified reviews on my website that this isn’t just some shallow sales speak. Even though I’m in the business of therapy, I’m not the least bit interesting in selling you anything that won't benefit your life. My passion and joy comes from seeing real people make real transformations to their lives. I’m comfortable sharing with you that before I became a therapist I also needed some help in the past and it was hands-down the best thing I've ever done for myself. I aim for all my clients to walk away saying the same thing.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION?

The initial consultation is a very relaxed and informal process that usually lasts around an hour. In the initial consultation we'll have a cup of tea or coffee and start by discussing your symptoms. I'll then ask you a few questions about your current life and background, as well as doing one or two quick questionnaires that will help me get to know you better. We will then discuss your treatment options and talk through any worries or concerns you may have. Once we agree on a way forward we'll arrange a date from which to commence. You are of course under no obligation to commence treatment if it doesn't feel right. It's important that you find a therapist you feel comfortable with. The main aim of the initial consultation is to provide us with an opportunity ensure we are well-suited to work together. I understand that therapy involves an input of your time and money so I make every effort to ensure you have a rewarding experience.

HOW WILL YOU HELP ME OVERCOME MY SLEEP PROBLEMS?

Naturally most people don’t know what to do when things get a bit out of control. Sometimes my clients have only just started experiencing sleep problems, while others have been battling with poor sleep and night disturbances like nightmares and night terrors for a number of years. For some clients sleep problems are part of a broader range of symptoms and problems they are struggling with. Everybody's needs are different and over the years I developed a unique way of helping people that I refer to as Sequential Psychotherapy. Whether you're interested in a specific type of therapy such as hypnotherapy, cognitive therapy, analytical therapy, coherence therapy, or counselling, or you simply don't know what help you need, sequential psychotherapy draws on all these approaches to provide you with a map of what steps we can take to help you overcome your symptoms and improve your life. If, like most people, you're unsure of what therapy actually is and how it can help, or it all just seems a bit confusing and new, I made this easy-to-understand video to walk you through the basics...

It’s hard to imagine what someone else could say or do to help you get control of the situation that you haven’t already tried yourself! Having successfully helped thousands of people triumph over what they thought was impossible, I believe that many symptoms and problems - like most other problems we encounter in life - can be brought to a successful and satisfying resolution when the right approached is used.
