Let's start with a question...

Where might you be six months from now?

Will you still be going round in circles; struggling with the same old problems in your relationship? Will you still be avoiding difficulties and challenges, just hoping they'll go away? Or perhaps you'll allow the spark to go out in your relationship and content yourself with just existing together, like many other dissatisfied couples do? It doesn't have to be that way. In just a few weeks I can help you turn things around so you can find yourself somewhere very different in six months time. Big words I know, but most people don't realise that relationship problems can be successfully and painlessly resolved, leading to a happier more fulfilling relationship and life. Stick the kettle on and let's find out more...

Allow me to reassure you that this is perfectly normal, and it’s something most people feel when they’re looking for help to tackle a personal matter, such as relationship difficulties. It’s hard to imagine what someone else could say or do to help you conquer your marriage or relationship difficulties that you haven’t already tried yourself! Having successfully helped thousands of people triumph over what they thought was impossible, I believe that many symptoms, problems, and issues - like most other problems we encounter in life - can be brought to a successful and satisfying resolution when the right approached is used.

UNDERSTANDING RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS

Relationships can be tricky, even at the best of times. They can also be a great source of comfort, restoration, and growth. As a social species relationships are an innate part of who we are and an important part of how we regulate our nervous systems, which, in simpler words, means how we stay calm and deal with life stressors. Unfortunately however, sometimes it is the relationship itself that is the life stressor, and this can leave both parties feeling isolated, alone, and unable to get comfort and support when you need it the most!

Why can relationships be so tricky at times? Relationships serve many different purposes, from giving and receiving care, comfort, and support, to fulfilling our reproductive and sexual needs, to providing us with opportunities to experience new things and to discover more about ourselves. The fact is however that when we start a new relationship we bring into it all of the baggage of our past - our old hurts, our fears and anxieties, our expectations and our needs. As does our partner! And these can be a source of common ground or a source of conflict.

It’s inevitable therefore that within relationships we are often confronted with obstacles and challenges that threaten the very foundations of the relationship and even our sense of self! Sometimes we rise to the challenge, we adjust our behavior, our expectations, and our goals, and we successfully communicate our needs and make progress together. At other times however we encounter friction, we shutdown, or we find aspects of our personalities that appear resistant to change, or are easily wounded by criticism and objections. Sometimes we can be needy and clingy, at other times distant and unresponsive.

A healthy relationship is one of open communication and mutual respect. Where most relationships run into difficulty is when the source of the problem isn't entirely clear, and any attempt to address it provokes conflict rather than co-operation. In such cases consulting a therapist or counsellor for marriage and relationship difficulties or couples problems is very much advised. The therapist can help you identify, understand, and navigate the unconscious processes that are affecting your relationship on the surface.

WHY AM I/WE EXPERIENCING RELATIONSHIP DIFFICULTIES?

There can be any number of potential causes of relationship problems so I work with people either on a individual basis or as couples to provide them with the space, support, and skills to get to the root of the problem. Earlier on I said that when we start a new relationship we bring into it all the 'baggage' of our lives so far. More often than not, at some point in the relationship some of this baggage gets opened, or it starts to get in the way. Let's look at this more technically...

The human brain is like a sponge, it soaks up experiences and learns from them. The job of your brain is to learn from experience so that you can better protect yourself in the future. Both your individual brain's have been shaped be your unique life experiences, and those unique life experiences inform and dictate the way you deal with problems in the present - different life experiences mean people deal with problems in different ways. Not only that, but different life experiences mean different people are affected by different things! One person maybe very organised and feel a need to over-control things, while the other is more spontaneous, 'free-spirited', and chaotic, for example. Both struggle to understand the other's position and their motivations, or why they are so rigidly in the way they are, and trying to change things can trigger defensive feelings in either party.

The challenge in relationships therefore is in how we unconsciously project the past onto the present. Our brain is like a virtual reality machine, while we all live in the same world we all see things differently. Our brain projects all our previous learning onto the present moment and colours how we see it. We don't know this is happening however as it isn't a conscious processes. We assume everyone sees it the way we do, but they don't...

This is why conflict and problems frequently emerge, not only within intimate relationships, but within ALL relationships, from friends and family to the wider community. Different people have different unmet needs, old hurts, and different ways of protecting themselves from hurt. To work through your own personal baggage and hang-ups, or to work together to understand each others perspective is a hugely rewarding process because it helps you see things with greater clarity. In our work together my main aim is to help you - or you and your partner - get clarity in the situation and establish what's really going on; to help you feel stronger in yourselves, and stronger in the relationship.

THE BENEFITS OF GETTING HELP FOR COUPLES PROBLEMS AND RELATIONSHIP ISSUES

One of the less talked about benefits of therapy, beyond finding solutions to the relationship problems you're currently facing, is that you walk away with a deeper level of self-insight, which enables you to feel more at peace with yourself and have better relationships with other people and the world around you in general. You feel like a better, stronger version of yourself, and you’re able to create a better life for yourself and the people around you. I’m sure you’ll see from the numerous verified reviews on my website that this isn’t just some shallow sales speak. Even though I’m in the business of therapy, I’m not the least bit interesting in selling you anything that won't benefit your life. My passion and joy comes from seeing real people make real transformations to their lives. I’m comfortable sharing with you that before I became a therapist I also needed some help in the past and it was hands-down the best thing I've ever done for myself. I aim for all my clients to walk away saying the same thing.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION?

The initial consultation is a very relaxed and informal process that usually lasts around an hour, but can extend to 2hrs in some cases if we have a lot to discuss. In the initial consultation we'll have a cup of tea or coffee and start by discussing your experience and what the problems are. I'll then ask you a few questions about your current life and background, as well as doing one or two quick questionnaires that will help me get to know you better. We will then discuss your treatment options and talk through any worries or concerns you may have. Once we agree on a way forward we'll arrange a date from which to commence. You are of course under no obligation to commence treatment if it doesn't feel right. It's important that you find a therapist you feel comfortable with. The main aim of the initial consultation is to provide us with an opportunity ensure we are well-suited to work together. I understand that therapy involves an input of your time and money so I make every effort to ensure you have a rewarding experience.

HOW DO YOU HELP WITH RELATIONSHIP DIFFICULTIES?

Naturally most people don’t know what to do when things get out of control. Sometimes my clients have only just started experiencing relationship difficulties, while others have experienced fairly consistent problems for a number of years or from relationship-to-relationship. For some clients their relationship issues are part of a broader range of symptoms and problems they are struggling with. Everybody's needs are different and over the years I developed a unique way of helping people that I refer to as Sequential Psychotherapy. Whether you're interested in a specific type of therapy such as hypnotherapy, cognitive therapy, analytical therapy, coherence therapy, or counselling, or you simply don't know what help you need, sequential psychotherapy draws on all these approaches to provide you with a map of what steps we can take to help you overcome the problems you're experiencing and improve your life. If, like most people, you're unsure of what therapy actually is and how it can help, or it all just seems a bit confusing and new, I made this easy-to-understand video to walk you through the basics...

PSYCHOTHERAPY, HYPNOTHERAPY, & COUNSELLING FOR RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS

COMMON ISSUES I HELP WITH

I work with people in lots of different ways. Sometimes only one person in the relationship wants to consult with me. Sometimes couples want to come together. At other times couples want to work with me independently at the same time or in succession. Sometimes I advise that one party works with me while another works with a trusted colleague. We can discuss the best way to approach things at your FREE initial consultation. Sometimes people worry that consulting the same therapist can lead to a conflict of interest however my personal approach is that I'm not here to take sides, I'm here to help each of you understand yourselves better. My job is to help you understand the blocks that are preventing you from resolving this obstacle by yourselves. Below is a list of common relationship problems I'm asked to help with:

  •     Commitment issues
  •     Poor communication
  •     Problem avoidance
  •     Power struggles
  •     Anger issues
