When you have low self-esteem you tend to be highly self-critical and frequently put yourself down. You tend to feel very self-conscious, experience anxious feelings in social situations, and you may be preoccupied with how you come across to others. You may avoid certain situations for fear of failure or because you're worried about being judged, and you may experience painful feelings of being unlovable or inferior to others. Contrary to popular belief, self-esteem can and does change when you know how. While self-help books can be useful they tend not to be as effective as working through your self-image problems with a knowledgeable, caring professional. Some people who consult me for help with low self-esteem already understand the roots of their poor self-image. It may have come from parents or teachers who were critical or abusive, or from being bullied at school. While they know why they have low self-esteem they feel unable to change it by themselves despite numerous attempts. On the other hand, some of my clients don't know why they feel the way they do. There can be any number of potential causes of poor self-image and confidence issues so I work with people on a individual basis to provide them with the space, support, and skills to get to the root of the problem. No matter what you’re going through right now, I want you to know that you’re not weak, and you’re not crazy or weird. If you were crazy you wouldn’t be exploring ways to help yourself improve things! If you're struggling to make sense of your self-esteem issues, the simplest way I can help to explain what’s happening is that you have a conscious mind and an unconscious mind, and the reason you may be struggling to change how you feel about yourself is that it has something to do with your unconscious mind; the part of your mind you can’t ordinarily 'see'. An easy way to think of it is that your brain is like a computer. Your conscious mind is the computer screen on which you can see images and perform certain tasks, whereas your unconscious mind is everything that’s happening inside the computer that you can’t see - it’s all the algorithms and number crunching. What happens inside the computer can affect how things look on the screen. Self-esteem can seem hard to change because it has more to do with these unconscious processes. My job is like a ‘tech guy’ you take your computer to after you’ve tried to sort things out by yourself. I use various tools and techniques to help you quickly work out what’s preventing you from feeling positive about yourself.

The initial consultation is a very relaxed and informal process that usually lasts around an hour. In the initial consultation we'll have a cup of tea or coffee and start by discussing your symptoms. I'll then ask you a few questions about your current life and background, as well as doing one or two quick questionnaires that will help me get to know you better. We will then discuss your treatment options and talk through any worries or concerns you may have. Once we agree on a way forward we'll arrange a date from which to commence. You are of course under no obligation to commence treatment if it doesn't feel right. It's important that you find a therapist you feel comfortable with. The main aim of the initial consultation is to provide us with an opportunity ensure we are well-suited to work together. I understand that therapy involves an input of your time and money so I make every effort to ensure you have a rewarding experience.

In its simplest form, your self-esteem is how you feel about yourself. It could be thought of as how you evaluate your own self-worth. Your self-esteem has a profound effect on almost every area of your life, from your work-life, to relationships and social life. For this reason therapy to help improve self-esteem can profoundly improve the quality of your life. When you have low self-esteem you tend to be highly self-critical and frequently put yourself down. You tend to feel very self-conscious, experience anxious feelings in social situations, and you may be preoccupied with how you come across to others. You may avoid certain situations for fear of failure or because you're worried about being judged, and you may experience painful feelings of being unlovable or inferior to others. It’s common for clients who struggle with low self-esteem to think of it as a permanent personality trait; an integral, unchangeable part of who you are. Contrary to popular belief, self-esteem can and does change when you know how. While self-help books can be useful they tend not to be as effective as working through your self-image problems with a knowledgeable, caring professional. Some people who consult me for help with low self-esteem already understand the roots of their poor self-image. It may have come from parents or teachers who were critical or abusive, or from being bullied at school. While they know why they have low self-esteem they feel unable to change it by themselves despite numerous attempts. On the other hand, some of my clients don't know why they feel the way they do. In either case I'll help you bring about the positive changes you'd like to see.

 

 

 

 

WHY DO I STRUGGLE TO IMPROVE MY SELF-IMAGE?

 

There can be any number of potential causes of poor self-image and confidence issues so I work with people on a individual basis to provide them with the space, support, and skills to get to the root of the problem. No matter what you’re going through right now, I want you to know that you’re not weak, and you’re not crazy or weird. If you were crazy you wouldn’t be exploring ways to help yourself improve things! If you're struggling to make sense of your self-esteem issues, the simplest way I can help to explain what’s happening is that you have a conscious mind and an unconscious mind, and the reason you may be struggling to change how you feel about yourself is that it has something to do with your unconscious mind; the part of your mind you can’t ordinarily 'see'. Far from being some scary place as some people think, your unconscious mind comprises a number of different brain regions whose job is simply to process lots of information in the background so you don’t have to...

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

An easy way to think of it is that your brain is like a computer. Your conscious mind is the computer screen on which you can see images and perform certain tasks, whereas your unconscious mind is everything that’s happening inside the computer that you can’t see - it’s all the algorithms and number crunching. What happens inside the computer can affect how things look on the screen. Self-esteem can seem hard to change because it has more to do with these unconscious processes. My job is like a ‘tech guy’ you take your computer to after you’ve tried to sort things out by yourself. I use various tools and techniques to help you quickly work out what’s preventing you from feeling positive about yourself.

The initial consultation is a very relaxed and informal process that usually lasts around an hour. In the initial consultation we'll have a cup of tea or coffee and start by discussing your symptoms. I'll then ask you a few questions about your current life and background, as well as doing one or two quick questionnaires that will help me get to know you better. We will then discuss your treatment options and talk through any worries or concerns you may have. Once we agree on a way forward we'll arrange a date from which to commence. You are of course under no obligation to commence treatment if it doesn't feel right. It's important that you find a therapist you feel comfortable with. The main aim of the initial consultation is to provide us with an opportunity ensure we are well-suited to work together. I understand that therapy involves an input of your time and money so I make every effort to ensure you have a rewarding experience.
