It's also hard to imagine how talking to a therapist can help when the problem seems physical! BASIC FACTS ABOUT HEALTH ANXIETY (HYPOCHONDRIA)

Everyone can experience health anxiety and it's perfectly normal to feel anxious about your health and any troubling physical sensations or symptoms you experience. Health anxiety becomes a clinical issue when your anxiety and symptoms persist for a long time and in spite of all attempts to address things medically. The technical term for health anxiety is 'hypochondria'. However I prefer to use the term health anxiety because the word 'hypochondriac' is often used in a derogatory way. Health anxiety, is a genuine, distressing, yet treatable condition suffered by many people. It's estimated that around 5% of the general population suffer from health anxiety, however I believe the real number to be much higher.

As far as we know, human beings are the only species capable of contemplating death from the comfort of their own armchairs! This amazing feature of our brain means that to a greater or lesser extent we can all experience health anxiety from time-to-time. In some cases however, health concerns can become more pervasive and persistent. You develop an intense preoccupation with your health leading to significant confusion and distress. In such cases some sort of counselling or therapy for health anxiety is very much advised and can yield amazing results.

IT'S NOT "ALL IN YOUR HEAD"!

Understandably, if you're struggling with health anxiety and unusual or distressing physical symptoms, you may be unsure about the prospect of consulting a therapist. After all, the root of the problem appears to be physical and it seems logical that you should be consulting a doctor. In fact, most individuals suffering from health anxiety usually only come to an awareness that they may be experiencing a psychological issue when the doctor's tests and examinations routinely come up clear. Even then - and perfectly understandable - the notion that your symptoms might have a psychological basis can be difficult to accept. Not only does the problem feel physical, but people naturally don't like to think of themselves as experiencing a psychological or emotional difficulty. One reason being that people tend to think that a problem with their body is purely mechanical, whereas a psychological issue might represent a defect in their character. Allow me to reassure you that psychological or emotional issues never represent a defect in your character - they are simply the result of how your brain is processing various experiences. In this regard they can be thought of as being mechanical in nature too! There can be many potential causes of health anxiety all of which have nothing to do with you 'making it up' or it being 'all in your mind'! Let's explore some of the major ones now.

COMMON ISSUES THAT CAUSE OR INCREASE HEALTH ANXIETY

1) General Anxiety - Individuals who experience generally high levels of anxiety can be prone to health anxiety. The health anxiety is resolved once the underlying anxiety issues have been treated.

2) OCD - Individuals who suffer from OCD or from a high level of obsessive thinking can also be prone to health anxiety, again, once the underlying issue is resolved the health anxiety typically abates.

3) Stress - Various experiences can cause our body's stress response to get stuck in a self-reinforcing stress cycle leading to usual physical sensations. Also, in times of high stress people may become more aware of, and anxious, about their health.

4) Loneliness - Perhaps the least recognised cause of health anxiety can be loneliness. As a social species relationships and connections with other people are an integral part of how we regulate out nervous systems and feel safe in the world and in ourselves. Loneliness, which is unfortunately so common in society, can be a major trigger for heath anxiety.

5) Auto-suggestion - Auto-suggestion is a little understood psychological phenomenon in which the brain can create an experience of something that isn't actually occurring. Stage hypnotists understand how to create the conditions through which this phenomenon can be used for comic effect, however the very same conditions can occur naturally in our day-to-day lives without us being aware of it, leading to the experience of symptoms and sensations that have no physical basis.

6) A History of Illness - Health anxiety can also arise if you've experienced significant illness in the past, or if illness (or health anxiety) is prevalent within your family. Alternatively sufferers may have experienced the death of a loved one at a significant time in their development.

7) Trauma - Traumatic experiences can affect the function of our nervous system. Unless traumatic experiences are sufficiently processed they can cause unusual bodily sensations as well as feelings of intense panic or anxiety due to the fact that the fight/flight/freeze response fails to down-regulate or 'switch off'.

As you can see, far from being a case of "it's all in your head", there are often complex biopsychosocial causes of health anxiety. Often health anxiety results from a complex combination of two or more of the factors mention above. Sufferers of health anxiety experience symptoms that are highly distressing and very real, from heart palpitations, to muscle spasms, tension headaches, all manner of aches and pains, rashes and skin problems, to name a few. However with the correct treatment plan most people are able to make a complete and lasting recovery from health anxiety and the troubling symptoms that come with it.

THE BENEFITS OF GETTING HELP FOR HYPOCHONDRIA / HEALTH ANXIETY

One of the less talked about benefits of therapy, beyond finding solutions to your health anxiety, is that you walk away with a deeper level of self-insight, which enables you to feel more at peace with yourself and have better relationships with other people and the world around you. You feel like a better, stronger version of yourself, and you’re able to create a better life for yourself and the people around you. I’m sure you’ll see from the numerous verified reviews on my website that this isn’t just some shallow sales speak. Even though I’m in the business of therapy, I’m not the least bit interesting in selling you anything that won't benefit your life. My passion and joy comes from seeing real people make real transformations to their lives. I’m comfortable sharing with you that before I became a therapist I also needed some help in the past and it was hands-down the best thing I've ever done for myself. I aim for all my clients to walk away saying the same thing.

HOW WILL YOU HELP ME OVERCOME MY HEALTH ANXIETY?

Naturally most people don’t know what to do when things get out of control. Sometimes my clients have only just started experiencing health anxiety, while others have been battling with intense hypochondria for a number of years. For some clients health anxiety is part of a broader range of symptoms and problems they are struggling with. Everybody's needs are different and over the years I developed a unique way of helping people that I refer to as Sequential Psychotherapy. Whether you're interested in a specific type of therapy such as hypnotherapy, cognitive therapy, analytical therapy, coherence therapy, or counselling, or you simply don't know what help you need, sequential psychotherapy draws on all these approaches to provide you with a map of what steps we can take to help you overcome your symptoms and improve your life. If, like most people, you're unsure of what therapy actually is and how it can help, or it all just seems a bit confusing and new, I made this easy-to-understand video to walk you through the basics...
