PSYCHOTHERAPY, HYPNOTHERAPY, & COUNSELLING FOR ANGER

DOWNLOADTHE FREE WELCOME PACK HERE! For your privacy, no email registration required! If you’re looking for help to overcome troubling anger issues and you’re considering some sort of therapy as an option you may be feeling nervous or apprehensive, or perhaps a little sceptical, or even worried that you can’t be helped. Allow me to reassure you that this is perfectly normal, and it’s something most people feel when they’re looking for help to tackle a personal matter, such as having a short fuse and being quick to anger. It’s hard to imagine what someone else could say or do to help you conquer your anger or rage that you haven’t already tried yourself! Having successfully helped thousands of people triumph over what they thought was impossible, I believe that many symptoms and problems - like most other problems we encounter in life - can be brought to a successful and satisfying resolution when the right approached is used.

BASIC FACTS ABOUT ANGER AND ANGER MANAGEMENT ISSUES

According to a 2008 report by the Mental Health Foundation, around 1 in 10 people say they have difficulty controlling their anger, and almost a third of people polled said they knew someone who has trouble controlling their anger. Interestingly fewer than 13% of people who admitted having anger issues had sought help for it. The reason for this is likely to include feelings of guilt, shame, or embarrassment, or it may simply be that people don't know where to go to get help. Allow me to reassure you that anger and anger-related issues can be successfully treated - in a non-judgmental way - here at The Bristol Psychotherapy & Hypnotherapy Clinic!

Anger is a natural part of our fight / flight / freeze survival response. When we experience stress, or we are exposed to particular triggers, anger can be an instinctive way we react. While anger is perfectly normal, and at times is a healthy response to various life stressors or boundary transgressions, you may have found that anger has becoming an unhealthy or destructive force in your life and it feels like it's time to take control now.

Anger can stem from a pervasive pattern of short-temper, explosiveness, irritability, or frustration. When this happens it is usually an indication that something is going on under the surface. It may be work stress, financial stress, or family problems, or the cause may be completely unknown to you. At the emotional level anger is a way of establishing certainty where there is uncertainty. At the intellectual level anger is a way of communicating the message, “I want this to stop!”

Anger can be destructive to relationships so it’s important for us to establish what exactly is triggering your anger and get to work resolving it. Unchecked anger issues can easily damage family, friendships, and working relationships leading to a great negative cost to all involved. While I use the phrase 'anger management' at times, the goal of therapy for anger issues isn't really to control or manage the problem, but to completely resolve it by understanding and attending to the underlying, and often unconscious emotional cause.

WHY DO I HAVE SUCH A HARD TIME CONTROLLING MY ANGER?

There can be any number of potential causes of anger issues so I work with people on a individual basis to provide them with the space, support, and skills to get to the root of the problem. No matter what you’re going through right now, I want you to know that you’re not weak, and you’re not crazy or weird. If you were crazy you wouldn’t be worried about what’s happening and you wouldn’t be exploring ways to help yourself improve things! Anger may be a sign of stress and frustration, or even simple exhaustion. Alternatively anger may be a learned behaviour, acquired from your parents or the environment you grew up in. Often anger is a sign that you have unmet needs or that you feel out of control in relation to an important aspect of your life. The goal of therapy is to establish what those needs are and put you back in control. Anger may also serve as a defence against feelings of guilt, shame, or a sense of responsibility. The potential causes of uncontrolled anger can be many!

While both sexes can experience anger issues it is typically males who experience chronic patterns of short-temper and angry outbursts. This may be due to the fact that males tend to be less open with their feelings and have greater difficulty understanding and expressing feelings. Anger issues tend to fall into two main camps: general anger and specific anger. General anger is where you experience what psychologists refer to as a low frustration tolerance. Any number of day-to-day experiences such as a draw not closing properly, or the dishwasher not rinsing properly can trigger an anger response. General anger is usually a sign that there are broader issues at play that require resolving.

Specific anger is anger triggered by a highly specific set of circumstances or by a specific person or persons, such as your child or spouse, or aunt and uncle! Rather than being related to general stress levels, specific anger usually has a deeper emotional relevance that, as a sufferer, you may have little conscious awareness of. If you knew why you were being triggered in this way you wouldn’t be triggered! The goal of our therapy therefore is to not only lower your general stress levels but to access and resolve any unconscious triggers that cause you to lose control.

THE BENEFITS OF GETTING HELP FOR YOUR ANGER

One of the less talked about benefits of therapy, beyond resolving your angry outburst or angry moods, is that you walk away with a deeper level of self-insight, which enables you to feel more at peace with yourself and have better relationships with other people and the world around you. You feel like a better, stronger version of yourself, and you’re able to create a better life for yourself and the people around you. I’m sure you’ll see from the numerous verified reviews on my website that this isn’t just some shallow sales speak. Even though I’m in the business of therapy, I’m not the least bit interesting in selling you anything that won't benefit your life. My passion and joy comes from seeing real people make real transformations to their lives. I’m comfortable sharing with you that before I became a therapist I also needed some help in the past and it was hands-down the best thing I've ever done for myself. I aim for all my clients to walk away saying the same thing.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION?

The initial consultation is a very relaxed and informal process that usually lasts around an hour. In the initial consultation we'll have a cup of tea or coffee and start by discussing your symptoms. I'll then ask you a few questions about your current life and background, as well as doing one or two quick questionnaires that will help me get to know you better. We will then discuss your treatment options and talk through any worries or concerns you may have. Once we agree on a way forward we'll arrange a date from which to commence. You are of course under no obligation to commence treatment if it doesn't feel right. It's important that you find a therapist you feel comfortable with. The main aim of the initial consultation is to provide us with an opportunity ensure we are well-suited to work together. I understand that therapy involves an input of your time and money so I make every effort to ensure you have a rewarding experience.

HOW WILL YOU HELP ME OVERCOME MY ANGER ISSUES?

Naturally most people don’t know what to do when things seem out of control. Sometimes my clients have only just started experiencing anger management issues, while others have been battling with angry outbursts and short temper for a number of years. For some clients anger is part of a broader range of symptoms and problems they are struggling with. Everybody's needs are different and over the years I developed a unique way of helping people that I refer to as Sequential Psychotherapy. Whether you're interested in a specific type of therapy such as hypnotherapy, cognitive therapy, analytical therapy, coherence therapy, or counselling, or you simply don't know what help you need, sequential psychotherapy draws on all these approaches to provide you with a map of what steps we can take to help you overcome your symptoms and improve your life. If, like most people, you're unsure of what therapy actually is and how it can help, or it all just seems a bit confusing and new, I made this easy-to-understand video to walk you through the basics...
