Clinical Hypnotherapy

At The Bristol Psychotherapy & Hypnotherapy Clinic I practice two distinct forms of hypnotherapy: Clinical Hypnotherapy and Analytical Hypnotherapy. Clinical Hypnotherapy is perhaps the type of therapy most people think of when they think of hypnotherapy. It is often referred to as Suggestion Therapy as it involves the application of carefully worded hypnotic 'suggestions' that are delivered to your unconscious mind while you recline in a comfortable, relaxing state of hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a deeply relaxing experience that most people find entirely pleasurable - in the sessions you are slowly and safely induced into a hypnotic state whereupon specific suggestions will be given to you to influence your behaviour at an unconscious level. Hypnosis isn't recommended for people whose anxiety tends to be triggered by relaxation - fortunately however there are other ways of helping in such situations.

Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis isn't magical; its effect is purely psychological. The fact is that whenever we relax deeply and focus our attention we become more susceptible to the useful and constructive effect of suggestion. Understandably people occasionally worry that they could be influenced to do something that they don't want to do. Allow me to reassure you that nothing could be further from the truth. We are only capable of responding to suggestions that we actively want or desire and that don't contravene our moral code.

Consider for a moment a good friend suggesting to you to go to restaurant that you really don't want to go to. No amount of persuasion will work if you have made up your mind. On the other hand, the same friend could easily suggest to you to go to a particular restaurant if you already have the will or desire to do so. The fact that you would like help in the first place implies that you have the will to change your situation, and so the effect of clinical hypnosis can be incredibly powerful in influencing and augmenting your pre-existing desire and capacity to change. Depending on the circumstance I usually record the sessions so that you can download them and listen to them at home to supplement the work we do in the office.

An important point worth mentioning is that Clinical Hypnosis is better suited to less severe or complex issues, or issues with a short-term goal such as public speaking engagements or overcoming driving test nerves. Please be aware that hypnosis is not a magic cure that can resolve all of your problems in a single session. I really wish it was but unfortunately reality is different from what you see in the films! In my experience, clients get a better, more life-changing result, from more in-depth therapy or when hypnotherapy is combined with Cognitive Therapy, for example. Naturally this takes a little more time so it's dependent on the situation and your goals.

A testimonial from a happy Clinical Hypnotherapy client:

As soon as I entered the clinic I was made to feel at ease. Seb's approachable and friendly manner allowed me to talk freely of my reasons for seeking therapy. I was reassured of any uncertainties I had and I felt comfortable asking questions. The therapy itself was conducted in a professional manner and any anxieties I had were quickly allayed as the process began.
